Mayiladuturai-Mysore Express is the only train to Bangalore from Tiruchi. Day by day countless number of passengers travel by this train. Hence, reservation has become a nightmare, particularly during weekends and festival season. A day express train is a must to Bangalore from Tiruchi. The Tamil Nadu government has recently introduced ultra deluxe and AC buses to various places. If they introduce sleeper coach buses to Bangalore from Tiruchi, it will be a boon to the people of the city. Janakimaindhan S. Raj, OFT Estate ‘Extend train service’The Railway Minister did the right thing by extending the Bangalore-Salem passenger train to Nagore, as it will prove immensely beneficial to the people of central districts for travelling to Salem, Bangalore and Mysore. The people of Cauvery districts have been demanding overnight train facility to the southern districts of the State and to Kerala. I request the Railway Minister to extend the Kollam-Madurai Passenger to Nagore. It will help the people of Kerala to go to the shrines in Velankanni, Nagore and Tirunallar. Sufiya, Pudukottai Road Streetlights are offRace Course Road used to be a walkers’ paradise during early morning, when there is not much traffic. However, the streetlights are invariably not switched on particularly during new moon days. Will the authorities ensure that the streetlights are switched on till 6 a.m. considering the long hours of nights in the coming months? P. David, Teppakulam Sewage waterIn Officer’s Colony, sewage water flows out freely into the street, emitting foul odour and a breeding ground for mosquitoes. It is a health hazard to the general public and especially for students of YMCA school. The sewage water has stagnated in the middle of the roads for quite a number of days. Abdul Hakeem, Tiruchi Milk price hikeThe recent hike in the prices of Aavin milk will affect middleclass families. But the Chief Minister has justified the price rise. The government gets huge profit from TASMAC shops. So, the price of aavin milk should be withdrawn. K. Venkatesan, Rockfort Agraharam Attention MinisterCity town buses operating via Thillainagar and Woraiyur do not enter the Railway Junction. Passengers are compelled to get down at Plaza Complex. Woraiyur buses stop near Aristo junction. Aged passengers and those with children have to compulsorily engage an autorickshaw, who demand exorbitant fares, to go to the railway junction. Most of the buses are State-owned. Being a local MLA as well as the Transport Minister, K.N. Nehru must issue instructions so that the buses are allowed inside the railway junction. S.S. Azizulaa, Tennur No bus sheltersMost of the bus stops in the city are without bus shelters. If they are available, they do not serve the intended purpose for a variety of reasons. First, the public do not wait at the earmarked bus shelters, but on the road. Hence, the bus crew have developed the habit of stopping the buses wherever the people are crowded. Second, the condition of some bus shelters, like the one opposite to P&T Colony, which is precariously hanging. I request the authorities to demolish the bus shelter and erect a new one. H. Ghouse Baig, Crawford Colony Pits on highwaysWhile roads have been widened in Tiruchi, only in some places the patchworks have also been taken care of. When I travelled to Thanjavur by car recently, I came across many pits on the highways. This may cause major accidents. Vehicles such as lorry, bus and truck run over the pits without any major jerks. Whereas small vehicles find it difficult to do so. While trying to reduce the speed on seeing the pits, the heavy vehicles coming behind are unable to apply the brakes at that moment. It happens on all highway roads going towards Madurai, Dindigul and Chennai. A.G. Nihal Basha, Sangliyandapuram Need for check damThe State government is implementing a drinking water supply project for Ramanathapuram and Rameswaram using the Cauvery bed as a source. Already, Tiruchi city is facing water scarcity during April to July as the Cauvery goes dry. Therefore, the government should construct a check dam at Kambarasampettai in order to impound the water for replenishing the feeder wells before implementing other drinking water schemes. Ansar, K.K. Nagar Traffic bottleneckThe canopied bus stand at Tiruverumbur in Tiruchi-Thanjavur highway is a traffic bottleneck. As pointed by locals (The Hindu, March 6), there is a way out if a similar bus stand is created at a safe distance. The present one is a convex bus stand. If a concave bus stand is established, like the one at Thuvakudi, there will be free flow of traffic. Now-a-days, travel between Tiruchi and Thanjavur in mofussil buses is time-consuming due to traffic congestion and unscheduled stoppages. This problem has to be looked into. P.K. Raman, Ayyappa Nagar Interest calculationAt present, savings bank rules permit calculation of interest for a whole month on the basis of the minimum balance in the account between 11th and the last day of that month, depriving the depositor of the interest due for the portion of rest of the amount left with the bank on other days of the month however high it is. This could be justified in view of the multiplication of labour involved in calculation of interest on daily balances in the account. Now that all banks, including post offices, have switched over to the computer system, it is possible and reasonable to allow the depositors to get interest on SB accounts on the basis of daily balances of the month justifiably, giving them the benefit of advanced technology usage. The Centre could make amendments. K. Srinivasan, T.V. Koil No direct busMany railway employees of Goldenrock shops live in Edamalaipatti Pudur and Crawford area. Since there is no direct bus to Ponmalai from the areas, the employees face a lot of problems in reaching their work spot. Similar is the case with KK Nagar. Now , TNSTC has introduced vestibule and low platform buses in many routes. In order to cater the needs and requirements of the railway employees of KK Nagar, Edamalaipatti Pudur and Crawford areas, regular buses to Ponmalai can be pressed into service. H. Ghouse Baig, Crawford Eateries on the bridgeA number of eateries selling junk food are doing flourishing business in the Cauvery bridge everyday unmindful of the risk posed to both pedestrians and other vehicles passing through the stretch. The vendors dump the used plates and other waste into the hallowed river. It is time the twin problems of encroachment and pollution posed by such unscrupulous elements are tackled by the authorities. J. Anantha Padmanabhan, Srirangam © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
