TIRUPUR: South India Hosiery Manufacturers’ Association has said that the power holiday announced by the Electricity Board would weaken the small scale industries in Tamil Nadu and severely affect exports of knitwear. In a statement here on Thursday, its president Mohan P. Kandasamy said that workers would lose wages for a day and the power holiday was bound to affect productivity. Exporters would find it difficult to meet the tight deadlines for shipments and the production cost would go up if the manufacturers are forced to use generators. As the export industry has been facing crisis since strengthening of rupee against dollar, the power shortage would further affect them. Appealing to the Government to reconsider the decision of power holiday, he wanted the Government to take steps to purchase power from other States to save the hosiery and allied industries. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
