THENI: Storage level rose substantially in major dams in the district and in the Periyar dam, thanks to heavy showers in its catchments, on Western Ghats and Kodaikanal hill in the past 48 hours. However, the Vaigai dam recorded marginal increase only. The Sothuparai dam is filling up fast, owing to torrential showers and heavy inflow in several streams on Kodaikanal hill. Water level touched 123.7 feet (Total 126 feet) with an inflow of 66 cusecs. PWD officials hope that water level will cross its total height, if the rain continues for one or two days. The Sothuparai dam received 18 mm rain last night. The Shanmuga River dam has been receiving rain continuously for the past three days. The amount of rain too has gone up to 49 mm on Sunday. The storage level stood at 44 feet. VirudhunagarIncessant drizzle and intermittent heavy showers were reported in Virudhunagar district for the second day on Tuesday. Rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours till Tuesday morning: Sivakasi recorded 75 mm of rainfall followed by Sattur 47, Srivilliputtur 34, Tiruchuzhi 30.4, Watrap 30, Rajapalayam 25, Aruppukottai 19.4, Pilavakal dam 18.4, Vembakottai 17.7 and Kariyapatti 13.2 mm. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
