Celebration time: Tirupur Mayor K. Selvaraj distributing sweets to bus passengers on Thursday. — TIRUPUR: Cadres of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) celebrated the formation of Tirupur district by bifurcating Coimbatore and Erode districts, announced in the Tamil Nadu Budget, by bursting crackers and distributing sweets. Led by the city unit secretary of the DMK and Mayor K. Selvaraj, they distributed sweets to the public and bus passengers at the old bus stand here. He told reporters that it was the gift by the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, to the rapidly growing export city of Tirupur. By having a district headquarters, Tirupur and surroundings would get a fillip in infrastructure and enhanced administration. Welcoming the announcement, Tirupur Exporters’ Association has said the Government had fulfilled one of its long-standing requests. Its president A. Sakthivel said in a statement that the formation of Tirupur district will certainly boost the progress of Tirupur region, especially the garment sector. He also welcomed the inclusion of Tirupur city under the Tamil Nadu Urban Roads Development Project as it would help upgrade city roads, which is need of the hour. Lauding the introduction of e-district programme in five districts, Mr. Sakthivel wanted the programme be implemented in Tirupur district collectorate also. The TEA president wanted the Government to take efforts in implementing the power generating projects to ensure continuous electricity supply. The South India Hosiery Manufacturers Association president, Mohan P. Kandasamy, said the formation of Tirupur district, close on the heels of inaugurating Tirupur Corporation, would enthuse the local business community to strive hard to generate more employment.
