Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court set free a journalist of a local daily detained since June last for alleged links with the banned United Liberation Front of Asom. A division bench comprising Chief Justice J. Chelameswar and Justice Hrishikesh Roy set aside the order of detention of Rabin Dhekial Phukan, the Kakopathar correspondent of Asomiya Pratidin. Phukan was arrested following an order issued on June 20 and was subsequently booked under the National Security Act on December 13. Phukan’s wife, Anjali Dhekial Phukan, filed a habeas corpus petition before the High Court for setting aside the detention order. — PTI © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
