Form panels to monitor implementation of welfare schemes: CPI(M)

COIMBATORE: The government should form committees, comprising members of all parties, to monitor the implementation of welfare schemes, State unit secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) N. Varadarajan said here on Thursday.

“We have been pointing out that commission agents can prevent government relief from reaching the beneficiaries. The government will have to take note of this and form the committees. Our struggle for this will continue,” Mr. Varadarajn told reporters. He also suggested bringing welfare boards for various sections of workers under the Department of Labour.

“At present, these are under the Revenue Department and this will not benefit the workers.”

Distribution of land for the poor should be speeded up, he said.

There was a widespread opinion that dacoity was on the rise in the State. The police must be used effectively. At the same time, periodical meetings between the police and all-party leaders could be held to assess and improve situation and also to eliminate possibilities of excesses, he said.

Mr. Varadarajan said it was unfair on the part of Karnataka to claim that Hogenakkal was part of it. Creating tension between States would not help in finding a solution to territorial disputes or over water sharing.

The Centre should make a decisive intervention to resolve such disputes.

The 19th congress of the CPI(M) from March 29 to April 3 would deliberate on issues such as Centre-State relations, alternative policies to benefit the people, agrarian crisis and also caste conflicts and communalism. The party would discuss with the city police the route for the rally on the final day of the congress.
