Ranchi: Rejecting a no-confidence motion brought by the BJP against the chair, Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Alamgir Alam on Monday said the points raised by the Opposition did not merit consideration, leading to noisy scenes in the House. Reading out a two-page write-up quoting parliamentary rules and procedures, the Speaker said the notice for admitting no-confidence motion against him was rejected as the allegations raised were bereft of substance and evidence. Demanding admission of the motion, the BJP members accused the Speaker of irregularities in the recent recruitment of staff for Assembly and allegedly protecting ministers charged with corruption in the House. Taking on the Opposition charges, Deputy Chief Minister Stephen Marandi, who holds the parliamentary affairs portfolio, demanded privilege motion against those mentioning baseless allegations without any evidence. As the Opposition continued its slogans in the well of the House at the stroke of lunch, the Speaker adjourned the House till after the lunch break.- PTI © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
