UDF men block roads on hartal day

Kasaragod: The United Democratic Front (UDF) observed a hartal in Kasaragod taluk in the district on Friday from 6 a.m. to 6.p.m. to protest against the killing of Congress leader T. Balakrishnan at Kundar, Karadukka here.

Balakrishnan, who was the vice-president of the Karadukka mandalam committee of the Congress, was stabbed to death allegedly by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Thursday.

Shops and business establishments remained closed. Congress workers blocked traffic in many places in Kasaragod town causing much difficulty to commuters including schoolchildren. Many students were unable to attend examinations following the blockade.

Meanwhile, Balakrishnan’s body was cremated on the premises of his home at Kundar on Friday.

KPCC general secretaries M.K. Raghavan and K. Sudhakaran were among the leaders who attended the funeral.
