CHENNAI: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Friday condemned the move to revise property tax in all urban local bodies. Terming the decision anti-people, party general secretary Jayalalithaa demanded that the government order be withdraw. It was the responsibility of the government to improve civic conditions in municipal corporations, municipalities and town panchayats. Enforce the rule of revising the property tax once in five years, without taking up development projects, was not acceptable. When her party was in power, it did not revise property tax though it was due in October 2003. Ms. Jayalalithaa said it was Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi who, during his previous tenure, introduced the scheme of property tax in town panchayats in 1998, apart from revising the tax in municipal corporations and municipalities. — Special Correspondent © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
