Red Cross volunteers undergo training

Nagercoil: “Red cross is a symbol of humanity. To carry out humanitarian activities we needed trained volunteers with the sense of dedication, commitment and humanitarian zeal, so that human sufferings can be mitigated, alleviated and prevented,” said the honorary secretary, S. Natarajan.

Principles

Speaking to The Hindu he said that following the fundamental principles of Red Cross – Humanity, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality, the volunteers have to serve the mankind.

The services of Red Cross volunteers have to reach the grass root level with an intention to lend a helping hand to them.

With this idea the Tamil Nadu State headquarters of Indian Red Cross arranged to conduct training programme in Kanyakumari district.

Participation

As many as 45 men and 25 women came forward and underwent the training arranged by the Kanyakumari unit of Red Cross.

The topics for training for the first day were Red Cross Movement and Emblem. Seven fundamental principles of Red Cross, definition of volunteers – duties and responsibilities, rights of volunteers, difference between volunteers and members, what motivated the people to take up volunteering, expectations from volunteers, establishing good communication with the volunteers, introduction to disaster preparedness, disaster response and assessment, psychological support and counselling, case study and group exercise were propagated, said Natarajan.
