BANGALORE: Defending champion Madras Engineering Group (MEG) started its campaign on a winning note, beating Sports Hostel (Bangalore) in the ‘A’ Division State basketball league championship for the Prof. N.C. Parappa Memorial Trophy on Friday. The Sappers won 81-41, after leading 42-20 at the halfway stage. MEG’s Lloyd Anthony and Sridhar were in their element; the stocky Tinu Joseph converted 23 points besides manning the defensive board with aplomb. At the adjacent court, HASC beat Beagles 50-38. The results: HASC 50 (Rajkumar 13, Ismail 12) bt Beagles 38 (Shivu 10, Fernando 10); MEG 81 (Tinu Joseph 23, Lloyd Anthony 19, Sridhar 19) bt Sports Hostel 41 (M.R. Varun 13, Rabbani 13).
