REVIEWING progress: N. Gopalaswami, Chief Election Commissioner, and Naresh Gupta, Chief Electoral Officer, at a meeting in Chennai on Friday. — CHENNAI: The final electoral roll of Assembly constituencies after delimitation will be released on August 31, according to Chief Election Commissioner (CEO) N. Gopalaswami. He was here to review the progress of location of polling booths in Assembly constituencies after the delimitation. Mr. Gopalaswami told newsmen that the existing 54,000 polling booths in the State had to be correlated with the delimited constituencies, and electoral roll with photo identification prepared for the delimitated constituencies. The process of realignment of polling booths as per delimitation had been completed and the same was being sent to the districts for field level verification. The process would be over by April-end. After this preparation of electoral roll with photo identification for delimited Assembly constituencies would be taken and completed by July 1. Once the preparation of electoral roll was over, it would be published for public verification. After processing the objections and recommendations of the public, the final roll would be released on August 31. Mr. Gopalaswami said the next Lok Sabha and Assembly elections would be conducted based on the delimitation of constituencies. Regarding Karnataka Assembly elections, the Chief Election Commissioner said as the election process had to be completed by May 28, the Commission would soon take a decision on polling dates. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
