CHENNAI: A TADA court on Friday convicted and sentenced 11 persons to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) in the case relating to the attack on the Kullanchavadi police station in Cuddalore district 14 years ago. While Sundaram was sentenced to 10 years RI for criminal conspiracy, the others were given sentences ranging from two years to 10 years RI under different counts. A fine of Rs.10,000 each was imposed on them. The sentences would run concurrently. The period of detention undergone by the accused would be set off. CompensationIn his 269-page judgment, the Presiding Judge of the Designated Court under TADA (Prevention) Act, T. Ramasamy, ordered that the total fine amount of Rs.1 lakh be paid as compensation to Devaki, wife of Thillai Govindan, a constable who died in the attack. The prosecution case was that pursuant to the conspiracy, the accused threw bombs at the police station on November 18, 1993 around 1.30 a.m., causing the death of Govindan, who was on sentry duty, and grievous injuries to three constables. Property at the station was damaged. A pamphlet of the ‘Tamil Nadu Viduthalai Padai’ was recovered from near the station.
