Indian teams for World Cup

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The Indian archers will take part in the first of the four Meteksan World Cup at Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic from April 1 to 5.

Especially, the recurve bow section, an Olympic event, will be keenly watched, as the Indian team will have four archers who ensured the country the Olympic quota. The newly elected Secretary-General of the Archery Association of India (AAI), P.N. Mukherjee, said that the four — Dola Banerjee, Chekrovolu Swuro, Laishram Bombayla Devi (all women) and Mangal Singh Champia — have more or less ensured their participation in the Beijing Olympics bar a sudden slump in form or an unexpected injury.

In case of any such eventuality, equally capable archers in Jayanta Talukdar, Rahul Banerjee and Tarundeep Rai in the men’s section and V. Pranitha and Punya Prabha in the women’s section will carry forward India’s chances of a medal. The first test for the archers will be at the Caribbean’s Greater Antilles archipelago.
