More protests in JNU over hostel party clashes

NEW DELHI: The March 16 clashes during the Chandrabhaga hostel party at Jawaharlal Nehru University here have sparked a string of protests on the campus by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the JNU Students’ Union.

Protesting against “the series of violent incidents committed by the ABVP activists” on the campus and the administration’s alleged laxity in dealing with them, the JNUSU has launched a campaign demanding action against the “offenders”.

After organising a human chain this past Monday, the JNUSU organised a public meeting on “Communal Offensive, Violence and Institutional Responsibility: Issues At Stake For Campus Democracy” on Thursday.

The JNUSU had issued a letter of appeal to the faculty members sharing its concern over ABVP’s “consistent campaign of hate-mongering and violence” on the campus.

The ABVP had claimed that its activists were beaten up by former students’ union president Dhananjay Tripathi and Students’ Federation of India activists during the Chandrabhaga hostel party, even as the Left-backed students’ outfit had refuted the allegation outright. According to ABVP’s JNU unit head Amit Singh, Dhananjay and Roshan along with some outsiders beat up three students -- Manoj Kumar, Santosh Pathak and Saurabh Dubey -- “without any provocation”.
