Indian Bank stuns Sporting

Kolhapur: Indian Bank scored once in each half against the run of play to stun Mohammedan Sporting 2-0 in a Group B match of the second division I-League here on Sunday.

The Kolkata outfit had to blame itself as its forwards wasted at least half a dozen scoring opportunities.

However, Chennai-based opponents utilised the few chances that came its way at the Chhatrapati Sahu Stadium.

A. Suman Raj found the target in the 11th minute with a powerful shot at a time when both sides were yet to settle down.

Mohammedan Sporting regrouped after the initial jolt and gave a torrid time to Indian Bank defenders, especially in the second half, but failed to score.

Indian Bank sealed the result two minutes from time from a counter-attack through a S. Santha Kumar goal.

The loss is a huge blow to the Kolkata team who are looking ahead to seal a berth in the I-League top division after two years.

After today’s match, Mohammedan and Indian Bank are on three points each after two outings in Group B.

The top three finishers from each of the two groups of six teams will make it to the round-robin final round in Guwahati and four teams will get promoted to next year’s I-League first division. — PTI
