KANPUR: The Congress on Sunday came down heavily on the Bahujan Samaj Party, saying the BSP was responsible for the various “ills” confronting Uttar Pradesh. On the opening day of a two-day delegates’ convention of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee here, the party attacked Chief Minister Mayawati on issues such as corruption, transfers and trifurcation of the State. The Congress session is being held in the State after 26 years. It will culminate in a public meeting, which will be addressed by party president Sonia Gandhi and general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Monday. The Congress, however, was silent on the Samajwadi Party, with whom reports of a tie-up in the next Lok Sabha election are making rounds in the political circles. A political resolution said it was difficult to expect a transparent and corruption-free administration under the BSP government and the Chief Minister’s past record proved this. Since coming to power in May 2007, the present government had made a record number of transfers, it said. On creation of smaller States, the Congress accused Ms. Mayawati of playing politics. It asked her to stop writing letters (to the Prime Minister) and issuing statements. Instead, she should send to the Centre a resolution passed by the Vidhan Sabha on the creation of Bundelkhand, Purvanchal and western U.P. Mr. Gandhi’s visit to Bundelkhand forced her to visit the drought-hit region and announce sops for people. Till his visit, the region was ignored by the Chief Minister, it said. The present regime was incapable of giving security and justice to the Scheduled Castes and weaker sections, it said and mentioned the recent killing of five members of a Dalit family in Etawah. All India Congress Committee general secretary and in charge of U.P. affairs, Digvijay Singh, emphasised the need for issue-based struggle for the party’s revival and warned party men against indiscipline. He charged the BSP government with improper utilisation of the Central funds. State unit president Rita Bahuguna Joshi said leaders should take up the responsibility of strengthening the party. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
