Dehradun: A Congress MLA from Tehri has sent his resignation to the Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly alleging that he had been ignored in the distribution of tickets for local bodies elections.
Kishor Upadhayay submitted his resignation to Harak Singh Rawat. He said, “At least the party leaders should take me into confidence on the ticket distribution process.” Some other party legislators have also threatened to follow suit. Mr. Rawat confirmed that he received the resignation letter of Upadhayay and had convened a meeting of Congress legislators to discuss the issue. “I am not forwarding this resignation to the Speaker. But we will discuss the issue in the meeting of the legislators,” he said. Mr. Rawat said he was also upset with the PCC president Yashpal Arya and senior party leader Vijay Bahuguna as both of them were not consulting the Congress legislators in the ticket distribution process for the election to local bodies. “This is a serious issue. We will take up the matter with the party high command,” Mr. Rawat said. Congress sources said nearly half-a-dozen legislators were ready to resign from Vidhan Sabha if the party continued to ignore them over the issue. Local bodies elections are slated to be held next month with the election of Mayor of Dehra Dun becoming a prestige issue for various Congress leaders. -- PTI © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
