Railway station stairway work nearing completion

FACILITY SOON: Work on the stairway from the Pazhavanthangal subway to the railway station’s platforms in progress.
TAMBARAM: The construction of a stairway from the vehicular subway at Pazhavanthangal to the platforms at the railway station is nearing completion. The Southern Railway is executing the project work , though the proposal was as made in 2004.
The foot overbridge leading to the Pazhavanthangal station is among the steepest and the commuters, particularly senior citizens, have been urging both the Southern Railway and the Alandur Municipality to provide an alternative and easier access to the railway station.
It was then that the proposal for a flight of steps leading to the platforms of the railway station directly from the Pazhavanthangal subway was made. Union Minister and South Chennai Member of Parliament T.R. Baalu released a sum of Rs.7 lakh from his constituency development fund.
As more funds were required, the Alandur Municipality allotted Rs. 3.25 lakh from its general funds, its chairman R.S. Bharathi told The Hindu.
The project ran into problems initially with the contractor, who bagged the work order, abandoning it.
After sorting out the issues, fresh tenders were called for and work resumed recently, Mr. Bharathi said, adding that it would be completed soon.
A similar facility exists connecting the St. Thomas Mount Railway Station with the vehicular subway near it.
This would immensely benefit senior citizens, who formed a sizable chunk of the commuters boarding trains from Pazhavanthangal, said K.S. Raghavan, general secretary of the United Forum of Nanganallur Welfare Associations.
This was a long-pending demand of several hundreds of commuters belonging to Pazhavanthangal, Nanganallur and Adambakkam, he added.
