Nod for English in State schools

HYDERABAD: Introduction of English from class I in all government schools was approved on Tuesday after Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy gave the green signal to a proposal mooted by the School Education Department. He also okayed the starting of an English-medium section parallel to the Telugu medium in all high schools from class VI, a press release issued by the Chief Minister’s Office said.

Dr. Reddy agreed to strengthen the selected 6,500 government high schools, of a total of 10,500. Each school will have1,000-1,200 students and ‘100 per cent’ buildings, laboratories, a library, sports facilities and compound walls. These works will be taken up this year itself, with the tender and other process to be finalised this month. An amount of Rs.1,000 crore is being provided in the 2008-09 budget.

Unrecognised schools

The Chief Minister also approved action against unrecognised schools for sending private students through private schools. He was informed by department officials that there were only 690 students who missed the SSC March 2008 examination due to a delay by the unrecognised schools.
