Shoe firm staff stage stir

Staff Reporter

AMBUR: The employees of N.M. Zackaria Shoe Company in Ambur staged a sit-in protest against the management’s “anti-labour approach” here on Wednesday, the police said.

Some of the temporary employees of the company were often told to go on leave after they reported for duty.

Forced to go on leave

The management forced the temporary workers to go on leave for half-a-day’s wage, the protestors said.

According to sources, the company had handed over the job work to some small units spread across Ambur, without using the services of the temporary employees.

Explanation sought

The protestors had asked the management to explain in writing the reasons for asking the employees to go on leave. When the management refused to comply, the employees decided to stage a sit-in protest.

The stir went on for more than 10 hours.
