NEW DELHI: Delhi Zoo’s newest “hot property” -- its first captive born Indian bison or gaur -- has been put out for public viewing. The calf, born to a pair brought from Mysore Zoo, had been kept under special care and out of public view all along after its birth this past November.

“The Indian bison is found extensively in the southern parts of the country. This is our first bison calf and we are happy that it has managed to do well so far. The calf was kept under special care following the harsh winter and has been put on public display after the weather improved. It is adjusting well to the new environment,” says Delhi Zoo director D. N. Singh.

Delhi Zoo had exchanged a pair of jaguars for the bison. “The successful breeding by the pair is definitely a good sign for the zoo and re-asserts the fact that the environment available to the animal is good and comfortable. The birth also adds to the exchange value for the zoo. The calf was given special attention and care,” he adds.

The zoo is working at finalising its master plan which according to Mr. Singh will ensure that it becomes a world class facility and ensures more space for its inmates. The master plan would ensure a greener zoo with a better water supply system and sewage network.

“The aim is to provide the animals a more natural environment and ensure that visitors get a glimpse of the animals in their natural habitat and learn to appreciate the need to work towards protecting the animals,” said Mr. Singh.
