Burial, cremation charges go

Staff Reporter

Chennai: The Chennai Corporation’s decision to withdraw burial and cremation charges at all its facilities came into force on Thursday.

Mayor M. Subramanian said the Corporation has scrapped the charges of Rs.250 for gasifier cremation and Rs.225 for burial and, henceforth, the service would be offered free of cost.

On an average, 30,000 bodies are cremated or buried in Corporation grounds every year. Notice boards announcing that burial and cremation services are free have been posted on the grounds.

According to a release, pets could be buried at Mylapore and Moolakothalam Corporation cremation grounds, where 2,500 square metres have been set aside at the two facilities.
