More grant for tsunami housing programme

PUDUKOTTAI: The Union Government has sanctioned an additional sum of Rs.9.37 crore for providing more basic amenities and strengthening basic infrastructure in the housing programme for the tsunami-hit people.

The programme, being executed under the Rajiv Gandhi Rehabilitation Package, originally sanctioned Rs.55.76 crore at the rate of Rs.2.38 lakh for each of the 2,343 houses planned in the coastal blocks of Manamelkudi and Avudaiyarkovil. The Central Government had allotted an additional sum of Rs.9.37 crore, at the rate of Rs.40,000 for each of these houses, Collector D. Uthirakkumaran told ‘The Hindu’ here. The additional sum would be utilised not for individual houses but for strengthening the infrastructural facilities required for the residential areas. The facilities to be provided would be in accordance with the norms stipulated in the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam.

While 1,712 houses would be constructed in Manamelkudi block, the balance 631 houses would come up in Avudaiyarkovil block. The Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, A. Natarajan, who is the Programme Co-ordinator for the Tsunami District Implementation Unit, said that special funds had been allotted for repairing the panchayat office buildings and also for constructing meeting halls in all the 14 village panchayats in these blocks.
