NALGONDA: Telangana Rastra Samithi president K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s night halt at a Dalit colony in Varturu of Yadagirigutta mandal Monday night brought cheer among Dalits. After addressing a late night public meeting at Motukondur to mark Ambadkar birth anniversary, Mr. Rao stayed in the residence of A. Lakshmaiah and Buchhamma for the night. His hectic activity began early in the morning. With a “palla pulla (neem twig)” in his mouth, Mr. Rao visited the Dalit colony on foot. He evinced keen interest to know their problems of residents and tried to find out solutions. Vennela, a young girl of the colony, was the happiest person after meeting Mr. Rao. When the girl, who passed her Intermediate, asked him to help her pursuing MBBS course, Mr.Rao readily obliged her request. “Don’t bother about it. We are here to help you. You may come to my office,” was the response from the TRS founder. It prompted others to come out with the woes without any inhibitions. He was moved by a family’s decision to marry off their 15-year-old daughter. “No, don’t commit the mistake by performing the child marriage. Give her better education and ensure her a better future,” he said while offering them Rs.2, 000 to meet the expenses they incurred for the engagement function. He further assured monetary help to a farmer Yadaiah, who burnt his fingers by sinking three bore wells. Mr. Rao announced a buffalo to all 60 families besides Rs.5116 in cash “for according me wholehearted welcome.” He also spoke to the officials from the spot to attend a couple of problems of the Dalit families. The former MLA K. Nagesh noted down the assurance given by the party president. The TRS leaders took part in community launch in the colony. Later speaking to reporters, Mr.Rao lambasted the Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s Government for “neglecting” the interests of downtrodden. He charged the Government with spending crores of rupees for the publicity for the Rs.2-a-kg rice scheme. “Formation of the separate State is the only solution for our problems,” he said. Before going to Hyderabad, Mr. Rao and other leaders visited Wakf lands at Jiyapalli of Bibinagar mandal and warned of launching a mass movement if the district administration failed to protect them from the clutches of land grabbers. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
