VELLORE: The former Central Bureau of Investigation Director, D.R. Kaarthikeyan, has termed the meeting of Priyanka Vadra with life convict Nalini at the special prison for women at Vellore a “positive development.” “I am not surprised at her visit. You cannot live with hatred forever. It was her mother [Sonia Gandhi] who made efforts to commute Nalini’s death penalty to life sentence. I look at it positively,” he told The Hindu on Tuesday. Mr. Kaarthikeyan, who led the Special Investigation Team that probed the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, said prison was a place to reform. “While in our custody during investigation, many of those accused in the case regretted their act. Though a few said he was responsible for the Indian Peace Keeping Force operation in Sri Lanka, a majority of others expressed regret,” he said. He said he had great respect and admiration for Rajiv Gandhi as a charismatic leader known for his compassion and culture. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
