Venkataramana is champion

HYDERABAD: J. Venkataramana of South Central Railway won the Air Marshal Subrato Mukherjee memorial all-India FIDE-rated chess tournament in Delhi scoring nine out of the possible 11 points, according to information received here.

This was the third national-level title for Venkataramana.

Rishabh Agarwal bagged a double, winning the boys’ under-14 singles and doubles titles in the A.K. Arjun memorial AITA Talent Series tennis tournament here on Friday.

The results (finals): Boys: Under-10: Sri Jitesh Swamy bt B. Vaishnav 8-2. Under-12: Sai Nikhil bt Gandra Anush 6-2, 6-4. Under-14: Rishabh Agarwal bt Dhruv Balakrishnan 6-1, 6-2; Doubles: Rishabh Agarwal & Ankit Reddy bt B. Ajay & M. Nishanth 9-5.

Girls: Under-10: Harshita Rao bt Raveena Reddy 8-7(2). Under-12: Nayanika Reddy bt Shambhavi Dixit 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(8). Under-14: A. Sabatini bt Shambhavi Dixit 6-3, 6-1.

Former Ranji Trophy player and current State selector Youraj Singh will be conducting a summer coaching camp for boys and girls for 45 days at DRS International School (Kompally) from April 25.

The Hyderabad Hockey Association will organise the A-2 division league championship from April 27 at Begumpet Police Stadium and the ‘B’ division league at AOC grounds from April 25.

All participating teams may collect the fixtures copy from the HHA office at Begumpet from April 19.

It is also informed that an umpires clinic will be conducted on April 23 at Begumpet stadium from 5.00 p.m.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will conduct summer coaching camps in 51 disciplines at about 1000 playgrounds in and around the twin cities from April 25 to May 31 with about 1.25 lakh expected to take part, Dr. C.V.S.K. Sarma, Chief Commissioner and Special Officer, GHMC, said.

Sarma added that the GHMC limits were split into five zones for smooth and efficient conduct of the camps.

“The registration fee is Rs. 50 for cricket, tennis and badminton and for all the other disciplines, it is just Rs. 10 each,” he said.

Sarma appealed to the parents to make the optimum use of the facilities by sending their children as part of the overall objective of inculcating a sports culture. For particulars, interested can approach the nearest GHMC playgrounds for complete details.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy will inaugurate the swimming pool at Machilipatnam on April 23.

It was constructed at a cost of Rs.65 lakh. The 25m pool is the first one to be constructed under the government scheme to develop sports infrastructure at each district headquarters.

After the inauguration a summer camp will be conducted at the pool, said District Sports Development Officer B. Sudhakar on Friday.

Vijayawada paddler K. Praneetha will represent the AP team in the National Youth Games to be held at Bangalore from May 10 to 16, according to Krishna District Table Tennis Association secretary B. Uday Kumar. She was selected basing on her bronze-medal winning performance at the junior Nationals held at Indore last year.
