UGC Secretary to be repatriated

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Thursday decided to repatriate its Secretary Raju Sharma to his parent cadre, for the ostensible reason that his appointment, cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), was only for two years against a post with a five-year tenure.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the full Commission here and comes less than two months after Mr. Sharma, an Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officer, took charge on February 19, 2008. While this technicality is being cited as the official reason for his repatriation, sources in the UGC said he was being forced out for taking on the powers that be, both within and outside the Commission.
