Caught in a snarl: The state of traffic on one of the principal roads in the city on any given day

Dear Sir,

Before offering my suggestions to streamline the traffic, I extend my sympathies to V.S.K. Kaumudi Additional Commissioner and his entire brigade who are grappling with ideas to solve traffic issues.

1) The lower rung of the traffic police should be trained thoroughly to be very strict and honest in their jobs. 2) Restrictions should to be imposed on the movements of all types of goods carriers’ right from two wheelers. 3) No lorry to be allowed on city roads between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. 4). Strict lane system for all vehicles to be imposed. 5). Zig-Zag riders are to be checked and penalized. 6). Heavy penalties for violators. 7). Traffic sense be infused and induced for road users by amicable means.

Kamal Saini

Rajiv Nagar Dear Kamal,

Thanks for your mail. We are briefing the traffic staff regularly on how to discharge their duties. Recently, we have issued a notification regarding restrictions on vehicles on different roads during different timings. We will focus one by one on the patent violations by road users.

Regards,

V.S.K.Kaumudi, I.P.S.,

Addl.Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Hyderabad. Dear Sir,

Was the rule regarding removing sun control film withdrawn? With more and more vehicles equipped with high power halogen bulbs and drivers driving on full beam do not use the dipper making it tough to drive during the night. Will the police clarify?

Vijay Mohan,

Via email. Dear Mohan,

Drivers are supposed to dip the beam of the headlight to avoid dazzling drivers of vehicles coming in the opposite direction as per Rule 106 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

Dear Sir,

Please initiate appropriate action to remove encroachments of all kinds from footpaths and make them pedestrian friendly. Main encroachers are customers of retail outlets, transformers and public conveniences built by GHMC. Such actions will ensure that pedestrians don’t walk on roads.

Ensure pedestrian crossings on main roads are marked clearly and manned with a policeman or use ‘Pelican’ signals. Make the road dividers high enough to prevent people from crossing the roads everywhere. Surveillance cameras should be used to capture illegal parking or lock vehicles. Treat wrong side driving as a major offence and levy a hefty fine.

Provide monetary incentives to policemen by sharing a percentage of fines collected by them. Above all, the custodians of law should not be allowed to break traffic rules.

Kanthimathi Kannan,

The Right to Walk Foundation, Karol Bagh Colony Dear Madam,

We are generally sending vehicles caught on the wrong side to the court. As regards dividers and road markings, the GHMC has been requested to attend to those as well as removing structures on the footpaths

Dear Sir,

The Wellington Road running from Secunderabad Club to AOC Centre is a busy road. But adequate control is not being enforced from your side to curb illegal parking at certain pockets. You have put up a ‘No Parking’ board adjacent to Ghanshyam super market a month ago but there is indiscriminate parking between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Life of pedestrians is in danger as crossing the road is just not possible. Autos and cars again park their vehicles in front of the eating houses near Ambedkar statue near the nala where the road is already narrow. I suggest please deal with violators of traffic rules with iron hand and tow away some vehicles for a few days.

N.Mukhopadhyay,

Krishnapuri Colony, West Marredpally Dear Mukhopadhyay,

I have instructed the ACP to tackle wrong parking firmly. If you do not find improvement in a week, give me a ring on 94906 16127.

Dear Sir,

While proceeding from Jubilee Hills Check-post towards Banjara HillsRd.No.12, there is a T-Junction where Filmnagar Road No.1 branches off on the right side. This road is now being widened to 120 feet connecting to the new airport.

There another T-Junction branching out to a narrow road leading to Apollo Hospital where there are frequent jams as several retail malls, restaurants and others are located within 100 yards. It will help if the SBI-Apollo Road is made one-way up to Vijaya Bank T-Junction.

Traffic coming from Apollo side should not be permitted to take a right turn at the SBI ATM- Hotel Swagath crossroads, but proceed straight to join the main road .

N.R.Raghavendra Rao

Jubilee Hills Dear Rao,

We are examining the feasibility of implementing one-way near Apollo.
