Rainwater stagnation

Rainwater stagnation is common at Tiruchendur. Predominant among the spots are starting from the old bus stand towards the arch side at the four point crossing in front of T.B. Road entrance, in front of Bajanai Madam, a few yards away from the crossing of East and South Car Street, and finally at the crossing of West and North Car Street, being the largest and leave alone the smaller ones.

The reason for this state of affairs is that these spots are low-lying areas without proper drainage system. I request the authorities concerned to raise the level of such spots and create a proper drainage system allowing.

K.K. Krishnamurthy,

Tiruchendur.

Traffic violation

It is shocking to see too many persons travelling in a minivan violating traffic rules on Tuticorin Tiruchendur road. The authorities concerned should strictly enforce law and take appropriate action against violators.

Road accidents

This is with reference to the news report on ‘12,000 people died in Tamil Nadu in roads in 2007’ The Hindu, April 10, 2008.

It is saddening to note that the number of persons died in road accidents has increased to 12,036 which was about 9571 in 2001 and just over 11,000 in 2006. Just imagine the pitiable situation of the poor families whose sole bread winners might have lost their lives!

Road accidents occur due to narrow roads, sharp curves, road encroachments, poor visibility of lights during night and the fatigue of drivers due to continuous driving for long hours without taking rest and mainly because of non-observance of traffic regulations.

Hence, motorists should be educated on the hazards of traffic violation.

Tirunelveli.

Improve facilities

The Tuticorin Airport is catering to the travel needs of the people hailing from Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts. But the passengers are facing a lot of inconvenience.

First, the airport lacks proper infrastructure in that it does not have adequate automated teller machines. And there are no proper trolleys to get the luggage inside. Further, the availability of cars and cabs is poor. The approach road to the airport is to be renovated. P. Senthil Saravana Durai,

Vazhavallan, Tuticorin district.
