IPL cricket

The Indian Premier League Twenty20 matches being played in various cities have become a craze amongst youngsters, elders and housewives. Even those who have no knowledge of cricket, let alone the game’s different formats, have started showing keen interest in the game and seem to know the names of the players (even if they don’t know their identity) and the film stars associated with each team. Cricket has become a game of entertainment not only for our people but also for our politicians and prospective leaders.

Such extravaganza only leads to ostentatious display of wealth and publicity for celebrities. It does not, in any way, promote the game.

Money, glitz, glamour — all go into making the IPL a much talked-about show. But they have made a mockery of the traditional gentleman’s game called cricket. The Twenty20 format was introduced to revive cricket.

But from the manner in which it is shaping up under the IPL with all its glamour content, one wonders whether T20 will revive cricket or spoil it forever. A placard at one of the games which said ‘I am here to watch girls dancing,’ says it all.
