Health hazard

The area in front of a private hospital in Sikkil Raja Street in Ramanathapuram is being used as a sort of garbage dump by the municipality. The waste materials get scattered by the wind, leading to unhygienic conditions in the vicinity and poses a health hazard to residents. One wonders how a place on this busy road was chosen as a site to dump the waste in the first place. I request the authorities to stop this practice forthwith and keep the area clean as before.

Passengers travelling from the southern districts to Chennai and vice versa are put to much inconvenience owing to delay in the execution of track doubling work between Dindigul and Madurai. Will the authorities expedite the work to facilitate operation of more train services and reduce overcrowding in trains.

It is welcome news that on completion of the Karaikudi-Manamadurai-Virudhunagar broad gauge conversion work, an alternative train route Chennai from the southern districts will be made available (The Hindu, April 12). The railways must also link Bangalore with Rameswaram via Ramanathapuram, Karaikudi and Tiruchi. At present, the large number people from this region who travel to Bangalore go all the way to Madurai to board the Tuticorin-Mysore Express, accommodation in which is anyway hard to get. Just as Mayiladuturai-Mysore Express caters to people in delta districts, and Tuticorin-Mysore Express to people in southern districts, it is imperative that the people of Rameswaram, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Karaikudi and Pudukottai are provided with a direct train service to Bangalore.
