Rajya Sabha passes JIPMER Bill

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) Puducherry Bill, 2007 that declares it an institution of national importance.

Speaking during the debate, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said all the important suggestions of various committees and members were included in the amended Bill.

The government was forced to withdraw the Bill in the winter session after Communist Party of India (Marxist) members made strong objections and wanted some changes. Following discussions in the Cabinet, the Bill was reintroduced with some amendments.
