Speaker stays decision on sex education

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar, on Wednesday stayed the State government’s decision to introduce sex education for students from standard IX to XI from the coming academic year.

Mr. Kupekar’s directive came after both ruling and opposition parties’ members flayed the government’s decision which School Education Minister Vasant Purke had announced in the Legislative Council on Tuesday.

Mr. Kupekar directed that no action should be taken in the matter till a committee of experts and legislators discussed it threadbare and made its recommendation. He also advised the government to consult educationists, sociologists and legislators before taking such decisions.

Mr. Purke had also announced that he intended to introduce a comprehensive bill guaranteeing ‘right to education.’ The bill would have a provision for jailing parents and guardians who would fail to enrol their children in schools.
