Death of Kathak exponent mourned

NEW DELHI: Sangeet Natak Akademi and its associate bodies have mourned the death of eminent Kathak exponent Tirath Ram Azad here on Tuesday. He was 75.

Tirath Ram Azad had established himself as a performer and teacher of Kathak dance in the 1950s and was head of the Department of Dance at Gandharva Mahavidyalya from 1958 to 1988.

He also authored several books on Kathak and was conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2005.

“With the demise of Tirath Ram Azad, the world of Indian dance has lost an eminent teacher and scholar,” said the Akademi.
