Call to defeat proposed BJP strike

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) has issued a call to “expose and defeat” the Bharatiya Janata Party’s proposed strike on May 2 against price rise.

According to a CPI (M-L) spokesperson, the BJP too was part of the same ruling class parties who, in the name of fighting price rise, were trying to conceal the real reasons behind the problem.

The spokesperson said both the National Democratic Alliance led by the BJP and the United Progressive Alliance led by the Congress had wrecked the public distribution system by creating new categories like “above poverty line” and “below poverty line”.

Further, by allowing futures trading and huge bank advances, both governments had encouraged hoarding leading to a sharp increase in the prices of essential commodities.

The CPI (M-L) also accused the NDA and the United Progressive Alliance of raising the prices of petroleum products.

While rising international prices were one of the reasons, the extraordinarily high tax on these products in India added to the problem a great deal, the spokesperson said.
