Sangeetha Samajam honours eminent musicians

NEW DELHI: Sangeetha Samajam honoured eminent musicians with various titles in recognition of their outstanding contribution to music at its Annual Day function here on Saturday.

The awardees are: Prof. T. R. Subramanyam with the title of “Sangeetha Kala Vallabha”; Dr. Vasanthi Rao – “Sangeetha Kala Madhuri”; Dr. P. B. Kannakumar – “Madhura Gayaka”; Kumbakonam N. Padmanabhan – “Laya Praveena” (Mridangam); Radhakrishna – “Sangeetha Kala Visharada”; and Rukmani Jayarama Aiyar -- “Sangeetha Kala Visekshana”. The ceremony was presided over by industrialist K. P. Menon. Gayathri Fine Arts secretary N. A. Ramachandran will participate in the celebrations on Sunday.

According to Nirmala Bhaskaran, correspondent of KRJ Music School, an affiliate of the Samajam, the school has been imparting vocal training in Carnatic music for the past 12 years. The school was founded by Rukmani Jayarama Aiyar in memory of musician K. R. Jayarama Aiyar of Delhi. The school children are given exposure to public singing at various places during Ayyappa Mandala Pooja, Navarathri festival and Thyagaraja Aradhana.
