Church, Communist parties not opponents: CPI leader

KASARAGOD: The campaign that the Church and the Communist parties are opposed to each other is false, Communist Party of India (CPI) State assistant secretary C.N. Chandran has said.

He was reporting the decisions taken at the party Congress to the CPI district council here on Sunday.

The recent developments in the Latin American countries had blunted the edge of the anti-Communist campaign, Mr. Chandran said.

In the recent elections in Paraguay, Fernando Lugo of the Christian Democratic Party had emerged winner with the help of Left forces, he said.

Throughout Latin America, the progressive section among priests had aligned with the Communist movement to oppose and defeat the imperialist designs of the U.S., Mr. Chandran said.

The hegemonic attitude of the U.S. was the gravest danger being faced by the world. In Latin America, West Asia and Central Asia, the U.S. was facing stiff resistance to its imperialist incursions, he said.

Mr. Chandran said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government should end its policy of working with Israel as the latter was an ally of the U.S. in its imperialist wars in West Asia.

Mr. Chandran said the party had decided to make effective interventions in ecological issues. The U.S. was mainly responsible for the ecological problems faced by the third world. Most of the ecological waste in the world was created by the developed nations but they were not willing to participate in efforts to control the damage, he said.

The party Congress had finalised a strategy to ensure its growth across the country. The Andaman and Nicobar unit of the party would be reconstituted and a new party set-up would come into force in Sikkim, Mr. Chandran said.
