CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and leaders of political parties on Wednesday extended greetings on the eve of May Day. Mr. Karunanidhi said the Government had implemented many welfare schemes for workers. He recalled that it was the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government that declared May 1 a paid holiday. All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa said that besides remembering the achievements of the working class on the May Day, an amicable solution should be found to tackle the difficulties faced by the workers. Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss urged the workers to fight against exploitation. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy said the Central Government had executed several welfare schemes for workers and allocated several crores of rupees to improve their lot. Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary D. Pandian asked the workers to create a new society to safeguard the independence and the universe from global warming. CPI (Marxist) secretary N. Varadarajan called upon the working class to fight against the ill-treatment meted out to Dalits in rural areas. Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam president Vijayakanth said May Day was meant to highlight the rights of workers.
