Action against use of beacon lights on vehicles without authorisation

CHENNAI: Bypass road work in Chidambaram town is expected to be completed by December, Highways Minister Vellakoil M.P. Saminathan told the Assembly on Wednesday.

Replying to a query from A. Arunmozhithevan (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), the Minister said the work was being taken up under the Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project.

Electronic meters

To another question on the functioning of electronic meters installed on autorickshaws plying in Chennai, Transport Minister K.N. Nehru said nine companies, which had supplied the meters, had been asked to assess the working of the meters of all the 40,000 vehicles. It would begin in two weeks.

To a query on the use of beacon lights on vehicles, the Minister said a government order had been issued, specifying dignitaries permitted to use them. The government would act against those using such lights without authorisation.

Rope car scheme

When Arul Anbarasu (Congress) wanted to know the status of the rope car scheme for the Sholinghur Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister K.R. Periyakaruppan said the RITES, which had carried out the study, found the proposal economically unviable. The cost was estimated at Rs. 5.5 crore. However, the government was of the view that instead of taking loans, the scheme could be implemented by utilising surplus funds from other temples.

Sub-jail upgrade

When V. Senthil Balaji (AIADMK) asked whether the Karur sub-jail would be upgraded as a district jail and relocated from the existing site, Revenue and Housing Minister I. Periasamy said the government would examine the issues.
