Bangalore: Amateur runners keen to improve their skills in the run up to the Sunfeast World 10k run here on May 18, can now train under the auspices of the ‘Nike Run Club’, which was launched here on Wednesday evening. The training will be held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday till May 14. Renowned coach V.R. Beedu and former athlete Reeth Abraham will guide the programme.

Nike India’s marketing director Sanjay Gangopadhyay said that the club was meant to give an impetus to the habit of running. “There are statistics that say that in 2010, 60 per cent of us would have heart ailments and it is time we took care of our bodies. We have our run clubs all over the World and the India debut now happens in Bangalore. The club will impart basic running skills ranging from techniques to the use of right footwear. We are not trying to be a professional club aiming to churn out World Class athletes, all we want is to make running fun,” Gangopadhyay said.

Anju Bobby George said that it was good that running was being encouraged. “The Sunfeast World 10k run is the World’s highest prize money event and I am happy that this club will train people to run well.,” Anju said.

Reeth Abraham, one of the coaches at the club, spoke about the need to run more. “We need to find time to run especially in these times of extra stress,” Reeth said. The Nike Run Club is a free training programme and participants can log on to inside.nikeplus.in to get more details. — Principal Correspondent
