Implement sex determination prevention act strictly: Collector

Sangareddy: Medak district Collector Piyush Kumar asked for stricter implementation of the 1994 Prevention Act of Sex determination of foetus. He was reviewing the implementation of the Act on Thursday. He called upon the Red Cross society, youth and other social organizations and media to help monitor the activities of the ultra sound scanning centres that adopt the sex determination and termination of pregnancies.

According to a press release the district Medical and health officer Sarojini Reddy said that the department has served notices to all the 107 Private nursing homes in the district about the provisions of the Act and were also warned not to involve in sex determination activity. She said that such tests would be allowed only in rare conditions when the life of mother or the child is at risk.

She warned the parents and also the doctors not to resort to such tests as the Act suggests three years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 10,000 to the first time offenders.

DRO Prakash Kumar and others also participated in the meeting.
