Miscellaneous - This Day That Age

dated May 3, 1958: Fall in standards

An indication of what is really afflicting him and what influenced him to seek temporary retirement from the routine duties was given by Prime Minister Nehru to the Congress Parliamentary Party, which met on May 1 to consider his statement made on April 29. Mr. Nehru denied he was physically unfit and that he wanted a holiday to recover. What worried him was that a great many things were out of tune in this country and the Congress organisation. Something was not right with public life generally in the country. There was too much jobbery and lust for power and positions and larger and more fundamental issues were ignored. He was not talking of the Congress party alone but the country as a whole. This was the reason why he wanted to get away from the daily routine so that he could do some quiet thinking.
