Legal Correspondent

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan will inaugurate a Lok Adalat in the Supreme Court on Saturday to take up cases in which parties are encouraged to come to a compromise for settlement of their disputes.

This is the first time the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee has taken up cases for settlement through the Lok Adalat. Though it was tried last year, the response was not encouraging. This year, thanks to the initiative of the Chief Justice, 44 matters relating to motor vehicles accident tribunal cases, and labour and matrimonial issues will be taken up.

Initially a Bench of the Chief Justice and comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and P. Sathasivam will hear two MV cases. Thereafter a Bench comprising Justices Pasayat and Sathasivam will hear 29 cases and another consisting of Justices Ashok Bhan and Aftab Alam will hear 13 matrimonial and labour cases.
