46-lakh compensation awarded

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal has awarded a compensation of Rs. 46 lakh to a woman who was rendered permanently disabled in an accident six years ago.

Tribunal Judge J.P.S. Malik awarded the compensation to 29-year-old Menka Lidhoo, who worked as an assistant manager with a private telecommunication company. The Judge directed the National Insurance Company and vehicle owner Sagar Taunk to pay the amount with 9 per cent interest from the date of filing the incident.

The Judge noted that the driver of the vehicle, Desh Raj Upadhyaya, and the owner had abstained from the court proceedings which indicated that they did not have much to say against the petition.

On June 16, 2002, Ms. Lidhoo was going to her office in a Toyota Qualis along with other colleagues when the rashly driven vehicle met with an accident near Noida. The driver, instead of trying to provide help to the injured, fled the spot, the court noted.
