Four arrested in cash van robbery case

NEW DELHI: With the arrest of four young men, the Delhi police have claimed to have worked out the sensational robbery in Greater Kailash-II here last month in which a gang of armed men robbed a cash van of Rs.30 lakh after injuring its security guard. The accused have been identified as Rashid (21), Gian Chand (23), Harvinder (27) and Ravinder (28). The police claim to have recovered Rs.39.59 lakh in cash, precious jewellery, a Maruti-800 car, an auto-rickshaw and a motorcycle from them.

The robbers had ambushed the CMS Securitas cash van parked outside a shopping complex in the DDA market on April 7 evening and made off with Rs.30 lakh after throwing chilly powder at security guard Suresh Kumar and driver Gyanendra. The accused fired at and injured Suresh when he resisted their robbery bid. “During investigation, the police received a tip-off that a group of robbers previously involved in several criminal cases would be coming to New Delhi railway station to commit a robbery. A trap was thus laid near Indraprastha Park on Friday afternoon and a white Maruti-800 car was flagged down. One of the occupants of the car opened fire at the police team and the occupants tried to escape. The police returned the fire and arrested the four accused. A country-made pistol and a live cartridge were also seized,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H.G.S. Dhaliwal at a press conference on Saturday.

Gian Chand and Rashid purportedly confessed to their involvement in the robbery. All the four were also found involved in a month-old bus robbery case in the New Friends Colony area, the police said. “All the accused have earlier been arrested for their involvement in several criminal cases. Harvinder is involved in five cases including dacoity, robbery and theft. Rashid has been arrested twice and Gian Chand had earlier been arrested by East District Police,” said Mr. Dhaliwal.
