Girls dominate Ramaiah entrance test

HYDERABAD: Indicating the growing dominance of girls in IIT, more number of girls appeared in the entrance test conducted for entry into Chukka Ramaiah’s coaching institute, which is considered the gateway to IIT admission, held in the city on Sunday.

More than 12,000 students took the test of which 52 per cent were girls. Another interesting aspect was that nearly 300 students from six different States also tested their luck. The test was held at five centres in the Osmania University and one centre in Dilsukhnagar. Mr. Ramaiah said that number of students appearing from rural areas also increased this year.

The centre admits 150 students of which 25 seats are reserved for rural area students and admission into the remaining seats is based on merit also following the rule of reservation. “We have decided to provide 27 per cent reservation to OBC students like last year,” Mr. Ramaiah said.

Students said quality of question paper was very good and on expected levels. “It is as good as appearing for a competitive examination,” Sukeerti, one of the aspirants said. Her sister who wrote the test last year said the entrance helps in gauging one’s calibre.

Aspirants told the A.P. Legislative Council Chairman A. Chakrapani, who visited the centres, that the physics paper was tough while mathematics was relatively easy. Some students said the questions tested not just the principles but also the application of the subject and that is the difference between Ramaiah’s type of test and others. Mr. Ramaiah said analytical skills of students are tested in the examination like in the IIT.

He said each paper is valued thrice. The first valuation is done by senior students of Ramaiah institute, the second by a set of school teachers and the final valuation by the teachers of Ramaiah institute. “It will take minimum of three weeks to announce the results,” he said.
