KOCHI: Ernakulam’s P.V. Gireesh, a coach with the Global Public School and Rajashree Public School, won the Checkmate all-Kerala chess tournament, organised by the Cochin Midtown Rotary Club, Regional Sports Centre and the Chess Association-Ernakulam, here on Sunday afternoon. Gireesh and U.C. Mohanan finished on level at the end of the nine-round event but the former won the title with a superior progressive score. Aluva’s Nimmy A. George finished third. Final placings: 1. P.V. Gireesh (Ekm, 7.5 pts), 2. U.C. Mohanan (HIL, 7.5), 3. Nimmy A. George (Ekm, 7), 4. Alex Thomas (Wyd, 7), 5. G.S. Sreejith (Tvm, 7), 6. O.T. Anilkumar (Kzd, 7), 7. C.R. Raveendran (Ekm, 7). The results (ninth round): U.C. Mohanan drew with P.V. Gireesh, Nimmy A. George drew with C.R. Raveendran, M.B. Muralidharan lost to V.S. Sreejith, Alex Thomas bt R. Sriram, O.T.
