Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Unfortunate

While extravagant reality shows and concerts are becoming rampant in the name of music, it is ironical that the descendants of Shyama Sastri, one of the Carnatic music trinity, are struggling to make ends meet (May 6). The government and musical organisations should intervene to surmount the plight of the hapless descendants of the great musician.

It was sad to learn that the descendants of Shyama Sastri are living in penury with neither the government nor musicians caring for them. Now that their plight is known, I am sure many individuals and organisations will come forward to help them. They are part of our great cultural heritage.

It is saddening to see the direct descendants of the great composer, Shyama Sastri, languishing in abject poverty. The Hindu has done well to highlight their plight. This should make all those who revel in singing and listening to Carnatic music do their bit for the family of the great musician.

G. Jagannathan,

Dharmapuri
