Miscellaneous - This Day That Age

dated May 9, 1958: Slum clearance

An official team which investigated Government’s slum clearance programmes has reported that achievements in this field in the first two years of the Second Five-Year Plan were negligible both in physical and financial terms. Mr. S.K. Patil, Minister for Transport and Communications, who is the leader of the team, has submitted his report to the Home Minister, Pandit Pant, who is Chairman of the Committee on Plan projects. According to the report, the major part of Governmental effort in the programme, for which a provision of Rs.20 crores has been made in the Plan, has been said to be confined to working out basic preliminaries. The team has recommended the creation in every State of a statutory corporation for implementing slum clearance programmes.
